I'm not going to sugarcoat this: I failed the CAPA exam twice before I finally passed last month, and I want to share what actually made the difference because I wish someone had told me this stuff earlier. My first two attempts I was mostly doing flashcards and skimming the ABPANC content outline, scoring like 68-70% on practice questions and thinking I was ready. I wasn't.
What changed everything was being really honest about WHERE I was weak. For me it was pharmacology and the postoperative assessment criteria — I kept second-guessing myself on priority questions. I started using a structured ABPANC practice test routine, doing timed 50-question blocks and tracking every wrong answer by domain. That pattern-recognition piece is huge for this exam specifically.
I also finally got a proper study guide that mapped directly to the current ABPANC blueprint (not just generic perianesthesia content). Spent about 10-12 weeks, roughly 8 hours a week. Passed with a 412. If you're preparing for CAPA or CPAN, happy to answer questions — this community helped me a lot and I want to give back.
