Failed AANP twice — what finally clicked for my third attempt?

I'm not going to sugarcoat it — I failed the AANP twice before I finally passed last month, and I want to share what actually made a difference because I wish someone had told me this earlier. My first two attempts I was cramming Fitzgerald and doing random Quizlets and just... not retaining anything in a way that transferred to the actual exam. The questions on the real test felt way more clinical and nuanced than what I was practicing with.

What finally helped was switching to a structured AANP practice test routine — like actually timed, full 150-question blocks, reviewing every wrong answer the same day. I also found a study guide that broke pharmacology down by drug class mechanisms instead of just memorization lists. That shift alone probably accounts for 80% of my improvement on the pharm questions.

My third attempt I scored a 510. Not spectacular, but a pass. I studied about 3 hours a day for 8 weeks leading up to it. Anyone else go through multiple attempts? What exam tips helped you finally break through?

Three attempts here too, so you're not alone. Honestly the biggest thing for me was stop trying to memorize and start thinking like a clinician. When I read a question stem now I ask 'what's the most conservative, evidence-based move' and that alone filters out a lot of wrong answers. Also — cardiovascular and women's health were my weak spots and I specifically drilled those categories in the last two weeks.

68-72% at week 4 is actually solid — most people say aim for consistent 75%+ in the final two weeks before your date. And yes, the real exam is harder than most practice banks, so if you're hitting those numbers now you've got room to grow. You're on track.

What practice test platform were you using? I'm in the middle of my first attempt prep and I honestly can't tell if the questions I'm doing are anywhere close to real AANP difficulty. Some of the question banks feel way too easy and then I read posts like yours and get nervous. I'm at week 4 of my 10 week plan and averaging around 68-72% on practice sets. Is that where you were before you passed?
