  1. A car travels at a constant speed. After 2 hours it has gone 90 miles, and after 5 hours it has gone 225 miles. Which linear equation models the distance d in miles after t hours?

    Answer: d = 45t

    The speed is 90/2 = 45 mph and with d = 0 when t = 0, the equation is d = 45t.

  2. Which of the following is equivalent to x² - 10x + 25?

    Answer: (x - 5)²

    x² - 10x + 25 is a perfect square trinomial equal to (x - 5)².

  3. If 3/x = 12, what is the value of x?

    Answer: 1/4

    Multiplying both sides by x gives 3 = 12x, so x = 3/12 = 1/4.

  4. Two lines are perpendicular. One line has slope 2/3. What is the slope of the other line?

    Answer: -3/2

Perpendicular lines have slopes that are negative reciprocals: the negative reciprocal of 2/3 is -3/2.

  5. Solve for y: 2y/3 - 4 = 8

    Answer: y = 18

    Adding 4 gives 2y/3 = 12, then multiplying both sides by 3/2 gives y = 18.

  6. The sum of three consecutive integers is 48. What is the largest integer?

    Answer: 17

    Let the integers be n, n+1, n+2; then 3n + 3 = 48, so n = 15 and the largest is 17.

  7. Which value of c makes x² + 8x + c a perfect square trinomial?

    Answer: 16

    Completing the square: c = (8/2)² = 4² = 16.
