What is the role of a 'banksman' in manual handling operations on a construction site?
Answer: To guide and direct the movement of loads and vehicles using hand signals
A banksman (or signaller) guides the movement of loads, vehicles, and plant using standardised hand signals. They ensure safe communication between the operator and ground workers, particularly where visibility is limited.
What should you do if you identify a manual handling hazard on site?
Answer: Report it to your supervisor and avoid the hazard until it is resolved
Under HSWA 1974, workers have a duty to report hazards to their employer or supervisor. You should avoid the hazard until it has been assessed and controlled, and not attempt to resolve it unless you are trained and authorised.
What is the purpose of a mechanical handling aid?
Answer: To reduce the risk of injury by assisting with lifting, carrying, or moving loads
Mechanical handling aids such as trolleys, pallet trucks, hoists, and conveyor systems reduce the physical demands on workers and lower the risk of musculoskeletal injury during handling operations.
What does 'dynamic risk assessment' mean in the context of manual handling?
Answer: A continuous, on-the-spot assessment of changing conditions and risks during work
A dynamic risk assessment is an ongoing, real-time assessment where the worker continuously evaluates the changing conditions and adjusts their approach accordingly. This supplements the formal written assessment.
How should loads be stored on a construction site to minimise manual handling risks?
Answer: At waist height where possible, on stable surfaces, close to where they will be used
Loads should be stored at waist height where possible to minimise bending and reaching, on stable level surfaces, and close to where they will be used to reduce carrying distances. This applies the TILE principle.
What is the 'power zone' in manual handling?
Answer: The area between the shoulders and knees, close to the body, where lifting is most efficient
The power zone (also called the comfort zone) is the area between mid-thigh and mid-chest height, close to the body. Lifting within this zone uses the strongest muscles and maintains the best posture, reducing injury risk.
