What is the first step after recognizing an adult is unresponsive and not breathing normally?
Answer: Activate the emergency response system and get an AED
After confirming unresponsiveness, immediately activate EMS and retrieve an AED before starting CPR.
How long should a healthcare provider take to check for a pulse before starting compressions?
Answer: No more than 10 seconds
Pulse check should take no more than 10 seconds to avoid delaying compressions.
Where should you check for a pulse in an unresponsive adult?
Answer: Carotid artery
The carotid artery in the neck is used to assess pulse in adults.
For an infant, which artery is used to check the pulse?
Answer: Brachial
The brachial artery on the inside of the upper arm is used for infant pulse checks.
An adult has a pulse but is not breathing. What should you do?
Answer: Give 1 rescue breath every 6 seconds
For respiratory arrest with a pulse, give rescue breaths once every 6 seconds without compressions.
What hand position is used for chest compressions on an adult?
Answer: Heel of one hand on the lower half of the sternum with the second hand on top
