  1. Before travelling an excavator on a public road, what must the operator ensure regarding the machine's tracks or wheels?

Answer: The machine is clean, road-legal, and will not damage the road surface

Before travelling on a public road, the operator must ensure the machine meets road-legal requirements, that tracks or tyres will not damage the road surface, that lights and warning beacons are operational, and that appropriate road permits are in place.

  2. What is the correct boom position when travelling a tracked excavator across site?

Answer: Boom retracted with bucket low to the ground, just above surface level

When travelling, the boom should be retracted and the bucket carried low to the ground (approximately 300-400mm above surface level). This keeps the centre of gravity low, maximises stability, and improves the operator's forward visibility.

  3. What hazard is created when an excavator operates near overhead power lines?

Answer: Risk of electrocution through arcing or direct contact

Operating near overhead power lines creates a severe risk of electrocution. Electricity can arc across gaps, meaning the boom does not need to physically touch the line to cause a fatal electric shock. Safe clearance distances must be maintained at all times.

  4. When loading a dump truck with an excavator, where should the truck ideally be positioned?

Answer: At the side of the excavator so loading occurs over the side of the truck body

The dump truck should be positioned at the side of the excavator so that the operator loads over the side of the truck body. This minimises the slew angle, increases productivity, reduces the risk of material falling from height, and avoids swinging loads over the cab.

  5. What must an excavator operator check about the ground conditions before setting up for work?

Answer: That the ground can support the machine's weight and is stable enough for operations

The operator must assess whether the ground can support the machine's total weight during operations. Soft, waterlogged, or made-up ground can cause the machine to sink or topple. Timber mats or track mats may be needed to spread the load.

  6. What is the function of the excavator's slew brake?

Answer: It controls and stops the rotation of the upper structure

The slew brake controls and stops the rotation of the excavator's upper structure (the house) around the slew ring. It is essential for precise positioning of loads and preventing uncontrolled rotation, especially on slopes.
