A project deadline is in 6 weeks. Work must be completed in the first 4 weeks to allow 2 weeks for review. If there are 5 working days per week, how many working days are available for the work itself?
Answer: 20
4 weeks × 5 working days = 20 working days for the actual work.
A pump drains 45 litres per minute. How long does it take to drain a 2,700-litre tank?
Answer: 60 minutes
Time = 2,700 ÷ 45 = 60 minutes.
A driver leaves at 08:00 and must arrive by 11:30, travelling 168 miles. What minimum average speed is required?
Answer: 48 mph
Time available = 3.5 hours. Required speed = 168 ÷ 3.5 = 48 mph.
A conference runs from 09:00 to 17:30 with a 1-hour lunch break and two 15-minute breaks. How many hours of sessions are there?
Answer: 6.5 hours
Total time = 8.5 hours. Breaks = 1 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 1.5 hours. Sessions = 8.5 − 1.5 = 7 hours.
A worker can complete a task in 8 hours. Another worker can complete the same task in 12 hours. Working together, how long will it take?
Answer: 4 hours 48 minutes
Combined rate = 1/8 + 1/12 = 3/24 + 2/24 = 5/24 per hour. Time = 24/5 = 4.8 hours = 4 hours 48 minutes.
If 8 machines produce 640 items in 4 hours, how many items would 5 machines produce in 6 hours?
Answer: 600
Rate per machine per hour = 640 ÷ (8 × 4) = 20 items. 5 machines × 6 hours × 20 = 600 items.
