A vehicle accelerates uniformly from rest to 90 km/h in 10 seconds. What is its average speed during this acceleration phase?
Answer: 45 km/h
Under uniform acceleration, average speed = (initial + final) ÷ 2 = (0 + 90) ÷ 2 = 45 km/h.
A signal travels 1,200 m in 0.004 seconds. What is its speed in km/h?
Answer: 1,080,000 km/h
Speed = 1,200 ÷ 0.004 = 300,000 m/s; converting: 300,000 × 3.6 = 1,080,000 km/h.
A relay race has 4 runners each covering 400 m in times of 52 s, 50 s, 53 s, and 55 s. What is the team's average speed in m/s?
Answer: 7.62 m/s
Total distance = 1,600 m; total time = 52 + 50 + 53 + 55 = 210 s; average = 1,600 ÷ 210 ≈ 7.62 m/s.
Taps A, B, and C fill a tank in 4, 6, and 12 hours respectively. All three are opened but Tap A is closed after 1 hour. How much longer until the tank is full?
Answer: 2 hours
In 1 h all three fill 1/4 + 1/6 + 1/12 = 6/12 = 1/2; remaining = 1/2; Taps B+C rate = 1/6 + 1/12 = 1/4; time = (1/2) ÷ (1/4) = 2 hours.
A military convoy 2 km long travels at 40 km/h. How long does it take the entire convoy to pass a fixed checkpoint?
Answer: 3 minutes
Time = 2 km ÷ 40 km/h = 0.05 h = 3 minutes.
A boat rows 15 km downstream in 1 hour and 9 km upstream in 1 hour. What is the speed of the current?
Answer: 3 km/h
Downstream speed = 15 km/h, upstream = 9 km/h; current = (15 − 9) ÷ 2 = 3 km/h.
A train 200 m long travels at 72 km/h. How long does it take to completely pass through a tunnel 600 m long?
Answer: 40 seconds
72 km/h = 20 m/s; total distance = 200 + 600 = 800 m; time = 800 ÷ 20 = 40 seconds.
