What is the role of the sequence number field in a TCP segment?
Answer: Track the order of bytes to enable reassembly and detect missing data
TCP sequence numbers identify each byte of data so the receiver can reorder segments and detect any gaps or duplicates.
Which TCP/IP layer is responsible for logical addressing and routing packets across multiple networks?
Answer: Internet layer
The Internet layer (corresponding to OSI Network layer) handles IP addressing and routing packets from source to destination across interconnected networks.
A packet arrives at a router with TTL=1. What does the router do?
Answer: Discards the packet and sends an ICMP Time Exceeded message to the source
When TTL reaches 0 after decrement, the router discards the packet and sends an ICMP Type 11 (Time Exceeded) message back to the original sender.
In the OSI model, which layer is responsible for bit-level transmission over a physical medium?
Answer: Physical layer
The Physical layer (Layer 1) defines electrical, optical, and mechanical specifications for transmitting raw bits over a medium.
What is the primary difference between TCP and UDP regarding connection state?
Answer: TCP establishes a connection before data transfer; UDP sends data without establishing a connection
TCP is connection-oriented and requires a handshake to establish state before data transfer, while UDP is connectionless and sends datagrams without prior setup.
Which protocol is used to automatically assign IP addresses, subnet masks, and default gateways to hosts?
Answer: DHCP
DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) automatically provides hosts with IP addresses and other network configuration parameters from a central server.
In OSI encapsulation, when a Transport layer segment is handed to the Network layer, what does the Network layer add?
Answer: An IP header forming a packet
The Network layer wraps the Transport layer segment with an IP header (containing source and destination IP addresses) to create a packet.
