  1. A store marks up an item 40% above cost and sells it for $84. What was the original cost?

    Answer: $60

    Cost x 1.40 = $84. Cost = $84 / 1.40 = $60.

  2. A box of 24 pens costs $18.00. A box of 36 pens costs $24.00. Which is the better deal per pen?

    Answer: 36-pen box at $0.67/pen

    24-pen box: $18/24 = $0.75/pen. 36-pen box: $24/36 = $0.667/pen. 36-pen box is cheaper per pen.

  3. A tank fills in 20 minutes with Pipe A open and in 30 minutes with Pipe B open. How long to fill it with both pipes open?

    Answer: 12 minutes

    Rate A = 1/20, Rate B = 1/30. Combined = 1/20 + 1/30 = 5/60 = 1/12. Time = 12 minutes.

  4. A salary of $52,000 receives a 5% raise, then a 10% raise on the new salary. What is the final salary?

    Answer: $60,060

    After 5%: $52,000 x 1.05 = $54,600. After 10%: $54,600 x 1.10 = $60,060.

  5. If 15% of a number is 45, what is 40% of the same number?

    Answer: 120

    15% of N = 45, so N = 300. Then 40% of 300 = 120.

  6. A restaurant adds an 18% tip to a bill of $65. The customer also pays $4.50 in tax. What is the total amount paid?

    Answer: $81.20

    Tip = 18% of $65 = $11.70. Total = $65 + $11.70 + $4.50 = $81.20.
