Where should a gait belt be positioned when assisting with walking?
Answer: Around the waist over clothing
A gait belt goes around the client's natural waist over clothing, snug enough to grip with room for two fingers.
How should a client use a standard walker?
Answer: Lift it and place it one arm's length ahead, then step into it
Lift the walker, place it about one arm's length ahead with all four legs stable, then step forward one foot at a time.
Which is a fall risk factor caregivers should monitor?
Answer: Medications that cause dizziness
Medications causing dizziness, drowsiness, or blood pressure changes are significant fall risk factors.
What is orthostatic hypotension and how should it be addressed?
Answer: Sudden BP drop when standing; have the client sit at bed edge first
A sudden blood pressure drop when standing causes dizziness. Have the client dangle legs at the bedside for 1-2 minutes before standing.
Going upstairs with a cane, which goes up first?
Answer: Strong leg, then cane, then weak leg
Going up: strong leg first, then cane and weak leg follow. Remember: 'Up with the good, down with the bad.'
What is the primary purpose of passive range-of-motion exercises?
Answer: Maintain joint mobility when the client cannot move independently
Passive ROM exercises maintain joint flexibility and prevent contractures when clients cannot perform active movement.
