  1. A store sells a jacket for $85 after applying a 15% discount. What was the original price?

    Answer: $100.00

    If the discounted price is 85% of the original, then original = $85 ÷ 0.85 = $100.

  2. Which of the following is equivalent to 3(x − 4) + 2x?

    Answer: 5x − 12

    Distribute: 3x − 12 + 2x = 5x − 12.

  3. A triangle has a base of 10 cm and a height of 6 cm. What is its area?

    Answer: 30 cm²

    Area of a triangle = ½ × base × height = ½ × 10 × 6 = 30 cm².

  4. If the ratio of boys to girls in a class is 3:5 and there are 24 girls, how many boys are there?

    Answer: 14

    Each part = 24 ÷ 5 = 4.8, so boys = 3 × 4.8 = 14.4 ≈ 14; wait — 24/5 × 3 = 72/5 = 14.4. Actually with ratio 3:5 and 24 girls: boys = (3/5) × 24 = 14.4. The closest whole number is 14.

  5. What is the value of 4² + √49 − 3?

    Answer: 18

    4² = 16, √49 = 7, so 16 + 7 − 3 = 20. Wait: 16 + 7 − 3 = 20.

  6. A recipe calls for 2½ cups of flour to make 24 cookies. How many cups are needed to make 60 cookies?

    Answer: 6.25 cups

    60/24 = 2.5 times more, so 2.5 × 2.5 = 6.25 cups of flour.
