    Answer: $30

    Discount = 25% × $40 = $10. Sale price = $40 − $10 = $30.

    Answer: 420

    Rate = 240/4 = 60 mph. Distance in 7 hours = 60 × 7 = 420 miles.

  3. The ratio of boys to girls in a class is 3:5. If there are 24 boys, how many girls are there?

    Answer: 40

    3/5 = 24/x → x = 24 × 5/3 = 40.

  4. A population increased from 4,000 to 5,200. What is the percent increase?

    Answer: 30%

    Percent increase = (change/original) × 100 = (1200/4000) × 100 = 30%.

  5. If 3 apples cost $1.50, how much do 10 apples cost?

    Answer: $5.00

    Cost per apple = $1.50/3 = $0.50. 10 apples = 10 × $0.50 = $5.00.

  6. What is 35% of 280?

    Answer: 98

    35% × 280 = 0.35 × 280 = 98.

  7. A recipe calls for 2 cups of flour for every 3 cups of sugar. If you use 9 cups of sugar, how many cups of flour are needed?

    Answer: 6

    Ratio 2:3 = x:9. x = 2 × 9/3 = 6.

  8. A price dropped from $80 to $60. What is the percent decrease?

    Answer: 25%

    Percent decrease = (20/80) × 100 = 25%.
