0.40 × total = 120 → total = 120/0.40 = 300 gallons.
A runner completes a 5-mile race in 40 minutes. What is their speed in miles per hour?
Answer: 7.5 mph
Speed = 5 miles / (40/60) hours = 5 / (2/3) = 7.5 mph.
The ratio of teachers to students in a school is 1:18. If there are 540 students, how many teachers are there?
Answer: 30
1/18 = t/540 → t = 540/18 = 30 teachers.
A jacket is marked up 40% from its wholesale price of $70. What is the retail price?
Answer: $98
Markup = 40% × $70 = $28. Retail = $70 + $28 = $98.
A solution is 15% salt. How many grams of salt are in 200 grams of solution?
Answer: 30
15% × 200 = 0.15 × 200 = 30 grams of salt.
In a class of 36 students, 25% are left-handed. How many students are left-handed?
Answer: 9
25% × 36 = 0.25 × 36 = 9 students.
If 5 workers complete a job in 12 days, how many days would it take 10 workers to complete the same job?
Answer: 6
This is inverse proportion. 5 × 12 = 10 × d → d = 60/10 = 6 days.
A stock's price rose from $50 to $65. What is the percentage increase?
Answer: 30%
Percent increase = (15/50) × 100 = 30%.
