    Total profit = $840 − $600 = $240. Profit per item = $240 / 120 = $2.00.

  2. The sum of two numbers is 45 and their difference is 9. What is the product of the two numbers?

    Answer: 486

    x + y = 45 and x − y = 9. Adding: x = 27; y = 18. Product = 27 × 18 = 486.

  3. A recipe serving 4 people calls for 2.5 cups of flour. How many cups are needed to serve 10 people?

    Answer: 6.25

    Scale factor = 10/4 = 2.5. Flour needed = 2.5 × 2.5 = 6.25 cups.

  4. A car gets 32 miles per gallon and gas costs $3.80 per gallon. What is the gas cost for a 240-mile trip?

    Answer: $28.50

    Gallons needed = 240/32 = 7.5. Cost = 7.5 × $3.80 = $28.50.

  7. A painter finishes a house in 6 days; his apprentice takes 9 days alone. How many days will they take working together (round to the nearest tenth)?

    Answer: 3.6
