A student scored 78, 85, 92, and 79 on four tests. What score on the fifth test gives an average of exactly 85?
Answer: 91
Total needed = 85 × 5 = 425; current total = 78 + 85 + 92 + 79 = 334; fifth score = 425 − 334 = 91.
Workers A and B together earn $1,800 per week. Worker A earns $200 more per week than Worker B. How much does Worker B earn per week?
Answer: $800
Let B = x; A = x + 200; x + (x + 200) = 1,800; 2x = 1,600; x = $800.
A 15-liter radiator coolant mixture is 40% antifreeze. How many liters of pure antifreeze must be added to make a 60% antifreeze mixture?
Answer: 7.5 liters
Current antifreeze = 0.40 × 15 = 6 L; let x = liters added; (6 + x)/(15 + x) = 0.60; 6 + x = 9 + 0.60x; 0.40x = 3; x = 7.5 liters.
