BKSB Assessment System Overview

The BKSB (Basic and Key Skills Builder) is a widely used online assessment system in UK further education, apprenticeships, and workplace training programs. It measures learners' current ability in literacy (English) and numeracy (maths) against the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) levels: Entry Level 1, Entry Level 2, Entry Level 3, Level 1, and Level 2.

There are two stages to the BKSB process: the Initial Assessment, which places you at the correct level by identifying your approximate skill level, and the Diagnostic Assessment, which pinpoints specific areas of strength and weakness within that level. The diagnostic results are used by tutors and training providers to design a personalised learning plan.

BKSB assessments are used by colleges, training providers, employers, and apprenticeship programmes across England. Many apprenticeship standards require learners to achieve at least Level 2 in literacy and numeracy, equivalent to a GCSE grade 4 (grade C).

Key BKSB Literacy and Numeracy Topics

The BKSB Literacy assessment covers reading comprehension of formal and informal texts, identifying the main idea and supporting details, grammar rules (subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, apostrophes), punctuation (commas, semicolons, colons), and spelling of commonly confused words. At Level 2, you may also encounter questions on proofreading, text structure, and evaluating persuasive writing.

The BKSB Numeracy assessment covers the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) with whole numbers and decimals, fractions and mixed numbers, percentages and percentage change, ratio and proportion, basic algebra (solving for x), area and perimeter of standard shapes, and data interpretation from bar charts, pie charts, and two-way tables.

Entry Level questions focus on everyday contexts: reading a bus timetable, calculating change, or identifying a misspelled word in a sentence. Level 1 and Level 2 questions are more abstract and require multi-step reasoning. Practising at the level above your target is the most effective preparation strategy.

  • Practice reading comprehension by summarising short passages in one sentence
  • Review apostrophe rules: possession vs. contraction, and common errors
  • Drill times tables and short division to improve speed on numeracy questions
  • Work through fraction, decimal, and percentage conversion exercises daily
  • Study percentage increase and decrease using the multiplier method
  • Practise reading bar charts, pie charts, and frequency tables accurately
  • Learn to solve two-step word problems by identifying the operation needed
  • Review comma rules: lists, subordinate clauses, and direct address
  • Practise basic algebra by isolating the variable in one- and two-step equations
  • Complete timed mock tests to build confidence and manage assessment time effectively

How to Use This Practice Test PDF

Print the PDF and work through the literacy section first, then the numeracy section, without referring to notes — the real BKSB assessment is completed without outside help. After finishing, mark your answers using the answer key and note which topic areas you got wrong. Use those gaps to guide your revision before sitting the actual assessment.

If you are preparing for an apprenticeship or college enrolment, aim to score above 80% consistently on Level 2 practice questions. If your score is lower, focus on Entry Level 3 and Level 1 material first to build a solid foundation. Many learners find that just two to three weeks of focused daily practice is enough to move up one full level on the BKSB initial assessment.
