  1. On a welding symbol, where is the reference line located?

Answer: Horizontally drawn, to which all other symbol elements attach

The reference line is the horizontal baseline of the welding symbol to which the arrow, tail, and all weld symbols are attached.

  2. What does a weld symbol placed BELOW the reference line indicate?

Answer: Weld on the arrow side of the joint

A weld symbol placed below the reference line means the weld is to be made on the arrow side of the joint.

  3. Which joint type is most commonly used when welding two plates end-to-end in the same plane?

    Answer: Butt joint

A butt joint joins two members lying in the same plane with their edges meeting.

  4. A 'melt-through' symbol on a welding symbol indicates that:

Answer: Complete joint penetration from one side is required

The melt-through symbol (a filled circle on the reference line opposite side) specifies that complete fusion and penetration from one side is required.

  5. In AWS welding symbols, what does the number to the LEFT of a fillet weld symbol represent?

    Answer: Weld size (leg length)

The number to the left of a fillet weld symbol indicates the weld size, which is the leg length of the fillet weld.

  6. What type of groove weld has only one beveled member and is shaped like the letter 'J'?

    Answer: J-groove

A J-groove weld has a curved groove on one member only, shaped like the letter 'J'.

  7. When a welding symbol shows dimensions on BOTH sides of the reference line, what does this mean?

Answer: Welds are required on both the arrow side and the other side

Symbols on both sides of the reference line indicate that welds are to be made on both the arrow side and the other side of the joint.
