  1. A sector receives 12 aircraft per hour. The controller can handle a maximum of 18. At what point (in minutes) does the sector reach capacity if 6 aircraft are already present at the start?

    Answer: 60 min

Need 12 more aircraft to reach 18; at 12/hr rate, 12 aircraft arrive in 60 minutes.

  2. Route Alpha has 3 waypoints. Route Beta has twice as many waypoints as Alpha. Route Gamma has 4 fewer waypoints than Beta. How many waypoints does Gamma have?

    Answer: 2

    Alpha = 3; Beta = 6; Gamma = 6 - 4 = 2 waypoints.

  3. All aircraft with engine failures declare emergencies. Aircraft N201FX declared an emergency. Which is the most logical conclusion?

Answer: N201FX may have an engine failure or another emergency

Engine failure guarantees an emergency, but an emergency does not require an engine failure — other causes are possible.

  4. An aircraft climbs from 3,000 ft to 15,000 ft at 1,200 ft per minute. How many minutes does the climb take?

    Answer: 10 min

    Altitude gain = 15,000 - 3,000 = 12,000 ft; time = 12,000 / 1,200 = 10 minutes.

  5. Seven aircraft are sequenced for landing. Every odd-numbered aircraft in the sequence is a heavy. If aircraft 3 goes around, which numbered aircraft becomes third in the new sequence?

    Answer: Aircraft 4

When aircraft 3 goes around and leaves the sequence, aircraft 4 moves up to the third position.

  6. A controller issues 15 clearances per hour during normal ops and 22 per hour during rush. If there are 2 hours of normal ops followed by 1.5 hours of rush, how many total clearances are issued?

    Answer: 63

    Normal: 15 × 2 = 30; rush: 22 × 1.5 = 33; total = 30 + 33 = 63.

  7. If no departure is issued a clearance without an active flight plan, and Flight SWA77 has no active flight plan, what follows?

Answer: SWA77 will not receive a departure clearance

The rule is universal: no active flight plan means no departure clearance will be issued.
