What is the value of 3 + 4 × 2 − 1?
Answer: 10
Following order of operations (PEMDAS), multiply first: 4 × 2 = 8, then 3 + 8 − 1 = 10.
If a train travels 240 miles in 4 hours, what is its average speed?
Answer: 60 mph
Speed = Distance ÷ Time = 240 ÷ 4 = 60 mph.
Solve for n: n/5 = 9
Answer: 45
Multiply both sides by 5 to isolate n: n = 9 × 5 = 45.
Which of the following numbers is divisible by both 3 and 5?
Answer: 30
30 ÷ 3 = 10 and 30 ÷ 5 = 6, so 30 is divisible by both 3 and 5.
If the ratio of boys to girls in a class is 3:4 and there are 21 boys, how many girls are there?
Answer: 28
If 3 parts = 21, then 1 part = 7, so 4 parts (girls) = 7 × 4 = 28.
What is the next number in the pattern: 2, 6, 18, 54, ___?
Answer: 162
Each term is multiplied by 3: 54 × 3 = 162.
Simplify: 5x + 3y − 2x + y
Answer: 3x + 4y
