Answer: 3 hours
Original speed is 60 mph; new speed is 80 mph; 240 ÷ 80 = 3 hours.
A storage room holds 480 boxes. If each shelf holds 24 boxes and there are 4 rows of shelves, how many shelves are in each row?
Answer: 5
480 ÷ 24 = 20 shelves total; 20 ÷ 4 rows = 5 shelves per row.
A soldier burns 450 calories per hour running. If he runs for 1 hour and 20 minutes, how many calories does he burn?
Answer: 600 calories
1 hour 20 minutes = 4/3 hours; 450 × 4/3 = 600 calories.
A base has 3 mess halls. Hall A feeds 320 soldiers per day, Hall B feeds 280, and Hall C feeds 400. What percentage of the daily total does Hall C serve?
Answer: 40%
Total = 1,000; Hall C serves 400; 400 ÷ 1,000 = 40%.
A truck uses 1 gallon of fuel every 12 miles. If fuel costs $4.20 per gallon, how much does it cost to drive 180 miles?
Answer: $63.00
180 ÷ 12 = 15 gallons; 15 × $4.20 = $63.00.
Three soldiers split a task that takes 12 hours total. If Soldier A works twice as fast as each of the other two, how many hours does Soldier A work if all three work together for the same number of hours?
Answer: 3 hours
A does 2 units/hr and B and C each do 1 unit/hr; combined rate = 4 units/hr; total work = 12 units; 12 ÷ 4 = 3 hours each.
