  1. A recruit's monthly pay is $2,100. If 15% is deducted for taxes, what is the take-home pay?

    Answer: $1,785

    Tax deduction = 15% of $2,100 = 0.15 × $2,100 = $315. Take-home pay = $2,100 - $315 = $1,785.

  2. A supply truck can carry 2,400 pounds. If each crate weighs 150 pounds, how many crates can the truck carry?

    Answer: 16

    Number of crates = 2,400 ÷ 150 = 16 crates.

  3. A cistern is 3/4 full and contains 900 gallons. What is the total capacity of the cistern?

    Answer: 1,200 gallons

    If 3/4 of the capacity = 900 gallons, then full capacity = 900 ÷ (3/4) = 900 × (4/3) = 1,200 gallons.

  4. Two buses depart from the same station traveling in opposite directions. One travels at 45 mph and the other at 55 mph. How far apart are they after 3 hours?

    Answer: 300 miles

    Combined speed = 45 + 55 = 100 mph. Distance apart = 100 × 3 = 300 miles.

  5. A barracks can house 8 soldiers per room. If 156 soldiers need housing, how many rooms are needed?

    Answer: 20

156 ÷ 8 = 19.5. Since you can't have half a room, you need 20 rooms to house all soldiers.

  6. If a map has a scale of 1 inch = 25 miles, and two cities are 3.5 inches apart on the map, what is the actual distance?

    Answer: 87.5 miles

    Actual distance = 3.5 × 25 = 87.5 miles.
