  1. A pilot flies 240 miles in 2 hours. What is the aircraft's average speed?

    Answer: 120 mph

    Average speed = distance ÷ time = 240 miles ÷ 2 hours = 120 mph.

  2. If a fuel tank holds 60 gallons and the aircraft burns 12 gallons per hour, how many hours of flight remain when 24 gallons are left?

    Answer: 2 hours

    Remaining flight time = remaining fuel ÷ burn rate = 24 gallons ÷ 12 gal/hr = 2 hours.

  3. A gear with 40 teeth meshes with a gear with 20 teeth. If the larger gear rotates at 100 RPM, how fast does the smaller gear rotate?

    Answer: 200 RPM

    When two gears mesh, the smaller gear rotates faster; speed ratio = 40/20 = 2, so 100 × 2 = 200 RPM.

  4. What is 15% of 480?

    Answer: 72

    15% of 480 = 0.15 × 480 = 72.

  5. If a lever is 10 feet long and the fulcrum is placed 2 feet from one end, what is the mechanical advantage of the longer side?

    Answer: 4

    Mechanical advantage = effort arm ÷ load arm = 8 feet ÷ 2 feet = 4.

  6. An aircraft descends 3,000 feet over a horizontal distance of 9 miles. What is the glide ratio?

    Answer: 1:15.84

    Convert 9 miles to feet (9 × 5,280 = 47,520 ft), then glide ratio = 47,520 ÷ 3,000 = 15.84:1.
