If an aircraft's fuel efficiency is 8 miles per gallon and it carries 50 gallons, what is its maximum range?
Answer: 400 miles
Maximum range = fuel quantity × fuel efficiency = 50 gallons × 8 miles/gallon = 400 miles.
A propeller completes 2,400 revolutions per minute. How many revolutions does it complete per second?
Answer: 40
2,400 RPM ÷ 60 seconds per minute = 40 revolutions per second.
Two pistons in a hydraulic system have areas of 2 sq in and 20 sq in. If 50 pounds of force is applied to the small piston, what force does the large piston exert?
Answer: 500 pounds
Hydraulic mechanical advantage = area ratio = 20 ÷ 2 = 10; output force = 50 × 10 = 500 pounds.
If 3/8 of a fuel tank holds 30 gallons, what is the tank's total capacity?
Answer: 80 gallons
If 3/8 = 30 gallons, then 1/8 = 10 gallons, and the full tank = 8 × 10 = 80 gallons.
A wrench handle is 12 inches long and applies 36 foot-pounds of torque. What force is being applied to the handle?
Answer: 36 pounds
Torque = force × distance; converting 12 inches to 1 foot: force = 36 ft-lb ÷ 1 ft = 36 pounds.
An aircraft climbs at 500 feet per minute. How long will it take to reach an altitude of 10,000 feet from sea level?
Answer: 20 minutes
Time = altitude ÷ climb rate = 10,000 ft ÷ 500 ft/min = 20 minutes.
