  1. What is the constant of proportionality in the equation y = 4.5x?

    Answer: 4.5

In a proportional relationship y = kx, the constant of proportionality k is 4.5.

  2. A triangular prism has a base area of 15 square inches and a height of 8 inches. What is its volume?

    Answer: 120 cubic inches

    Volume of a prism = base area × height = 15 × 8 = 120 cubic inches.

  3. Which of the following is an equivalent expression to −2(3x − 4) + 5x?

    Answer: −x + 8

    Distribute: −2(3x) + (−2)(−4) + 5x = −6x + 8 + 5x = −x + 8.

  4. A population of bacteria doubles every 3 hours. If the initial population is 200, how many bacteria are there after 9 hours?

    Answer: 1,600

    After 3 hours: 200 × 2 = 400. After 6 hours: 400 × 2 = 800. After 9 hours: 800 × 2 = 1,600.

  5. A random sample of 50 students found that 30 prefer basketball over soccer. If the school has 400 students total, how many would you predict prefer basketball?

    Answer: 240

    30 out of 50 = 60%. Predicted for 400 students: 0.60 × 400 = 240.

  6. What is the scale factor if a model car is 5 inches long and the actual car is 15 feet long?

    Answer: 1:36

    Convert 15 feet to inches: 15 × 12 = 180 inches. Scale factor = 5:180 = 1:36.
