  1. A shop had a 'Buy 2, Get 1 Free' offer on tins of soup costing £1.20 each. How much would 7 tins cost?

    Answer: £6.00

    For every 3 tins, you pay for 2: 7 tins = 2 groups of 3 (pay for 4) + 1 extra. Total = 5 × £1.20 = £6.00.

  2. A garden fence has posts every 2 metres. If the fence is 20 metres long, how many posts are needed?

    Answer: 11

    This is a fence post problem: number of posts = (length ÷ spacing) + 1 = (20 ÷ 2) + 1 = 11 posts.

  3. A jug holds 1.5 litres. How many 250ml glasses can be filled from it?

    Answer: 6

    1.5 litres = 1500 ml. Number of glasses = 1500 ÷ 250 = 6 glasses.

  4. If 8 workers can complete a job in 6 days, how many days would it take 12 workers?

    Answer: 4

    Total work = 8 × 6 = 48 worker-days. With 12 workers: 48 ÷ 12 = 4 days.

  5. A thermometer shows -3°C. The temperature rises by 8 degrees. What is the new temperature?

    Answer: 5°C

    -3 + 8 = 5°C. Starting at -3, count up 8 degrees: -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

  6. A pizza is cut into 8 equal slices. Tom eats 3 slices and Sarah eats 2 slices. What fraction of the pizza is left?

    Answer: 3/8

    Total eaten = 3 + 2 = 5 slices. Remaining = 8 - 5 = 3 slices = 3/8 of the pizza.
