  1. A shop offers '3 for the price of 2' on cakes costing £2.50 each. How much do 9 cakes cost?

    Answer: £15.00

    9 cakes = 3 groups of 3. Each group costs 2 × £2.50 = £5.00. Total = 3 × £5.00 = £15.00.

  2. A spinner has sections numbered 1-5. What is the probability of spinning an even number?

    Answer: 2/5

    Even numbers from 1-5: 2 and 4 (that's 2 numbers). Probability = 2/5.

  3. A room is 6m by 4m. Carpet tiles are 50cm × 50cm. How many tiles are needed to cover the floor?

    Answer: 96

    Room: 6m = 12 tiles long, 4m = 8 tiles wide. Total = 12 × 8 = 96 tiles.

  4. A sale reduces prices by 30%. After the sale, prices return to normal (100%). What percentage increase is this from the sale price?

    Answer: 42.86%

    If original = £100, sale price = £70. Increase back to £100: increase = £30. Percentage = (30/70) × 100 = 42.86%.

  5. It takes 3 painters 8 hours to paint a fence. How long would it take 6 painters?

    Answer: 4 hours

    Total work = 3 × 8 = 24 painter-hours. With 6 painters: 24 ÷ 6 = 4 hours.

  6. A school has 750 pupils. 2/5 walk to school, 1/3 come by bus, and the rest are driven. How many are driven?

    Answer: 200

    Walk: 2/5 × 750 = 300. Bus: 1/3 × 750 = 250. Driven = 750 - 300 - 250 = 200.
