  1. Three friends share a bill of £84 in the ratio 2:3:2. How much does the person paying the middle share pay?

    Answer: £36

    Total parts = 2 + 3 + 2 = 7. One part = £84 ÷ 7 = £12. Middle share (3 parts) = 3 × £12 = £36.

  2. A car depreciates by 15% each year. If it costs £20,000 new, what is it worth after 1 year?

    Answer: £17,000

    Depreciation = 15% of £20,000 = £3,000. Value after 1 year = £20,000 - £3,000 = £17,000.

  3. A staircase has 15 steps. Each step is 18 cm high. What is the total height of the staircase in metres?

    Answer: 2.7 m

    Total height = 15 × 18 = 270 cm = 2.7 m.

  4. In a survey, 45% of 200 people preferred tea, 30% preferred coffee, and the rest preferred juice. How many people preferred juice?

    Answer: 50

    Juice = 100% - 45% - 30% = 25%. 25% of 200 = 50 people.

  5. A rectangular swimming pool is 50 m long, 25 m wide, and 2 m deep. What is its volume in cubic metres?

    Answer: 2,500 m³

    Volume = length × width × depth = 50 × 25 × 2 = 2,500 m³.

  6. A number is doubled, then 7 is subtracted. The result is 29. What was the original number?

    Answer: 18

    2x - 7 = 29. 2x = 36. x = 18.
