  1. A train ticket costs £14.50 for an adult and £7.80 for a child. What is the total cost for 2 adults and 3 children?

    Answer: £52.40

    Adults: 2 × £14.50 = £29.00. Children: 3 × £7.80 = £23.40. Total = £29.00 + £23.40 = £52.40.

  2. A number sequence goes: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, ... What is the next number?

    Answer: 21

This is the Fibonacci sequence where each number is the sum of the two before it: 8 + 13 = 21.

  3. A swimming pool is 25m long. How many lengths must you swim to cover 1 kilometre?

    Answer: 40

    1 km = 1000 m. Number of lengths = 1000 ÷ 25 = 40 lengths.

  4. A clock loses 5 minutes every hour. If it is set correctly at noon, what time does it show at 4 PM?

    Answer: 3:40 PM

    In 4 hours, the clock loses 4 × 5 = 20 minutes. It shows 4:00 - 0:20 = 3:40 PM.

  5. A book has 240 pages. Sarah reads 1/6 of the book on Monday and 1/4 on Tuesday. How many pages does she have left?

    Answer: 140

    Monday: 1/6 × 240 = 40 pages. Tuesday: 1/4 × 240 = 60 pages. Read = 40 + 60 = 100. Left = 240 - 100 = 140 pages.

  6. In a bag, the probability of picking a red marble is 0.3. If there are 50 marbles, how many are NOT red?

    Answer: 35

    Red marbles = 0.3 × 50 = 15. Not red = 50 - 15 = 35.
