  1. A class of 30 students took a test. 60% passed. How many students failed?

    Answer: 12

    If 60% passed, then 40% failed. 40% of 30 = 0.4 × 30 = 12 students failed.

  2. A recipe uses flour and sugar in the ratio 5:2. If 350g of flour is used, how much sugar is needed?

    Answer: 140g

    Flour:Sugar = 5:2. If flour = 350g, one part = 350 ÷ 5 = 70g. Sugar = 2 × 70 = 140g.

  3. A box has 24 chocolates. 1/3 are milk chocolate, 1/4 are dark chocolate, and the rest are white chocolate. How many are white chocolate?

    Answer: 10

    Milk = 1/3 × 24 = 8. Dark = 1/4 × 24 = 6. White = 24 - 8 - 6 = 10.

  4. A car's fuel tank holds 48 litres. It uses 6 litres per 100 km. How far can the car travel on a full tank?

    Answer: 800 km

    Distance = (48 ÷ 6) × 100 = 8 × 100 = 800 km.

  5. In a sale, all prices are reduced by 1/5. A jacket originally costs £45. What is the sale price?

    Answer: £36

    Reduction = 1/5 × £45 = £9. Sale price = £45 - £9 = £36.

  6. The mean of five numbers is 12. Four of the numbers are 10, 11, 13, and 15. What is the fifth number?

    Answer: 11

    Total = mean × count = 12 × 5 = 60. Sum of four numbers = 10 + 11 + 13 + 15 = 49. Fifth number = 60 - 49 = 11.
