Best free resources for KS prep — what's actually worth your time
Compiling a list of what's actually useful for KS prep after going through a lot of material that wasn't. Wanted to share what worked for me and hopefully save others some time.
For exam prep specifically, the free resources are surprisingly good. The free ks notary penalties and disciplinary actions questions and answers has questions that closely match real exam difficulty — not dumbed-down versions that give you false confidence.
What I'd skip: most YouTube "pass in one week" content. The explanations are surface-level and don't prepare you for the applied questions on the actual KS exam. Flashcards alone also aren't enough for this one.
What actually worked: timed practice sets with immediate review of wrong answers, reading the official reference material for any concept that came up more than twice, and finding one study partner for the practice test sections. The social accountability made a bigger difference than I expected.
The part about reviewing wrong answers thoroughly is so underrated. Most people (including me, first time around) just move on after getting something wrong. Going back to understand the concept is what actually builds retention for the KS.
Late to this thread but wanted to add — the practice test section trips up more people than any other part. If you're scoring below 72% there in practice, treat it as your only focus for at least a week before moving on. Breadth at the expense of depth in that area is a common mistake.

I almost quit halfway through honestly. The sheer amount of material felt overwhelming and I wasn't sure which stuff actually mattered for the test. What turned it around for me was finding the free ks notary laws and regulations practice questions and just drilling those repeatedly until the patterns clicked. That's the real core of what they test.
Don't sleep on the penalty and disciplinary action stuff either. I'd been skimming it thinking it was dry filler but questions on that showed up way more than I expected. If you're feeling burned out just push through that section specifically and I think you'll feel a lot more confident going in. Passed on my first try so it's definitely doable.
Honestly the thing that made the biggest difference for me was drilling the penalties and disciplinary action stuff until it was second nature. I kept skipping past it thinking it wouldn't show up much, but it's everywhere on the actual test. Once I actually sat down and made sure I understood the why behind each penalty, not just the what, everything started clicking a lot faster.
If you're short on time, don't spread yourself too thin trying every resource out there. Pick one solid practice test source and really work through it, reviewing every wrong answer instead of just moving on. That repetition is what got me over the finish line. Good luck, you've got this.
I'll be honest, I almost quit halfway through. The material felt overwhelming and I wasn't seeing progress, so I took a two-week break and almost didn't come back. What changed for me was stopping trying to memorize everything and just focusing on the areas I kept getting wrong -- penalties, timelines, stuff like that. Once I narrowed it down it got way more manageable.
If you're feeling burned out, you're not alone. I've talked to a ton of people who felt the same way around the midpoint. Just keep going, even if it's just 20 minutes a day. It's not about being naturally smart about this stuff, it's about consistency. I passed on my second attempt and honestly the free practice materials did most of the heavy lifting once I figured out how to actually use them.
