Time management during TFHC exam — how fast are you supposed to go?

Passed TFHC 3 months ago. Happy to share what I remember.

On the "TFHC exam" stuff specifically — I found the practice tests here were actually harder than the real exam on those questions. Which was great because going in I felt more prepared than I needed to be.

The time pressure is real though. I came in with maybe 8 minutes to spare and that was after skipping the ones I wasn't sure about and coming back.

Don't try to cram the night before. Seriously. Last-minute stress makes you second-guess things you actually know.

What helped me most with practice test specifically: stop thinking about it as a topic to memorize and start thinking about the types of decisions it's asking you to make. Once I shifted to that frame, my TFHC scores in that section jumped about 10 points within a week.

Failed it on my first attempt for exactly this reason. I thought 98 minutes sounded like plenty of time and didn't really pace myself — then suddenly I was at the temperature danger zone questions and had like 20 left with 8 minutes on the clock. Panic city.

What I changed: I started treating it as 45 seconds per question max, not ~60. That buffer matters because the cross-contamination and allergen questions can genuinely make you stop and think, and they'll eat your time if you're not careful. I also stopped second-guessing anything about handwashing steps or personal hygiene — those are almost always straightforward and I was wasting 30+ seconds on questions I actually knew cold. The food storage and reheating temp questions are the ones worth slowing down on if you're unsure.

Honestly what helped most before my second attempt was drilling with a tfhc practice test under actual timed conditions — not just reading through questions but forcing myself to keep a pace. Once I could consistently finish a 30-question set in under 20 minutes, the real exam felt way less rushed. Passed with time to spare the second time.
