How many weeks did you study for the CBT exam and what resources helped most?

I'm an audio engineer with 6 years of field experience planning to sit for the CBT — Certified Broadcast Technician exam this fall. I've worked mostly on the production side so I'm weak on RF transmission and FCC regulation sections. Started studying 5 weeks ago at about 45 minutes a day on weekdays.

My practice scores average around 67% right now and I want at least 80% before I book the real exam. Electronics fundamentals are fine — Ohm's law, impedance matching, I know that cold. It's the regulatory compliance questions that are destroying my score.

I've been using the SBE study guide and some YouTube playlists but they're not deep enough on FCC Part 73 material. Has anyone used a resource that covers regulatory content in exam-relevant detail without just reproducing the CFR verbatim?

Also curious how the actual exam felt for time. I've heard it's 100 questions and the limit isn't that tight, but I tend to second-guess myself and run long on timed tests.

I passed first attempt with 82% after 8 weeks at about an hour a day. The RF propagation and antenna theory questions were harder than I expected — the SBE guide undersells how much math shows up for that topic specifically.

The SBE guide is fine for concepts but you really need to read FCC Part 73 and Part 74 subparts directly. It's dry but probably 20% of the exam comes straight from those rules. I flagged every wrong practice answer and traced it back to a specific CFR section.

6 years of production experience should carry you through 60% of the exam. The regulatory section is what separates people who pass from people who don't. I'd put at least 40% of your remaining study time there.

100 questions, 3 hours. I finished in about 90 minutes and had time to review everything twice. You're not going to run out of time unless you completely freeze on something.

Just passed mine last month so I'll tell you what actually moved the needle for me. I had a similar gap with electronic fundamentals — I kept skimming past it thinking my field experience would cover it, and it didn't. What finally clicked was grinding through free cbt electronic fundamentals practice questions until I stopped guessing and started actually understanding why the wrong answers were wrong. That's the shift.

Six weeks total for me, probably 45-60 minutes a day like you're doing. Honestly the FCC regs section isn't as bad as it looks once you stop trying to memorize everything and just focus on the patterns they test repeatedly. You've got the experience, you just need the vocab to match what the exam expects. Don't overthink it.

Quick update since I'm in a similar boat -- just hit week 7 and pulled a 74% on a CBT practice test last night which honestly surprised me. The RF sections were rough for me too at first but something clicked once I stopped trying to memorize formulas and started understanding why the math works. FCC regs are still my weak spot though, I won't lie.

I'm planning to sit for the real thing in late September, so I've got about 8 more weeks to tighten things up. My daily sessions are closer to an hour now and I've been doing a ton of practice questions to get comfortable with the format. Keep going -- 45 minutes a day is more than enough if you're consistent with it.

Honestly I almost quit around week 3. The RF transmission stuff wasn't clicking and I was spending 45 minutes a night just feeling stupid. I put the books down for like four days and seriously considered just waiting until next year. Then a friend talked me back into it and I'm glad he did, because something about stepping away actually helped it stick when I came back.

I ended up studying for about 9 weeks total. The FCC regs were brutal at first but once I stopped trying to memorize everything and started understanding the logic behind the rules it got easier. Practice tests were the biggest thing for me, way more useful than reading the same material over and over. If you're already 5 weeks in you're closer than you think. Don't bail.

Six weeks in now and just hit a 74% on a full practice run, which honestly surprised me since I was bombing the electronic fundamentals section two weeks ago. I found a set of free cbt electronic fundamentals questions that finally made the concepts click for me — went through them twice. Still shaky on FCC regs but it's getting better.

I'm sitting for it mid-September. At this pace I think I'll be ready, maybe one more practice test the week before just to see where I land. Good luck to everyone else cramming right now.
